Airline Tubing, yup, that'll be what I'm knitting with next! I was invited, again, to vend at the Maker Faire May 19-21 with this incredible group of talented artists! If you've never been to the Maker Faire, you should go. It's a fantastic weekend for all things gears, wires, and "weird stuff!" makerfaire.com/makerfairehistory/ Last year, I knit using speaker wire. I split the copper wire from the casing, and knit with both materials. It turned out to be a beautiful piece that I have hanging in my bathroom window! So I started thinking about what I wanted to do this year. One Saturday morning during Stitching Together, I mentioned to the group that I wanted to knit with giant knitting needles. But I wasn't sure what I should use as material. When we got together again, Lyle (an incredible sock knitter) said "Why not tubing! It's pliable enough that it could be manipulated and you could fill it with colored water!" What a fantastic idea!!! I was able to sort thru, in my mind, what I wanted to create. A wall hanging using the linen stitch with two or three colors. When it came to figuring out the pumps, I called the Boy. He's a genius, he'll know what I'm talking about and what I need to do to achieve it!
"Oh yeah, I've done that project before." he said. Huh? "Yeah, don't you remember, it was a couple of years ago and I took four different small tubes, wove them together and filled buckets with water and had pumps that interjected water and air into the tubes." He went on to explain all the different types of pumps I can use, how I can set timers to the pumps, how I can use dosage pumps to interject air at different intervals... Who knew there was so much to pumps! Well, the Boy knew, of course! So this weekend I'll be testing out what it's like to knit with the airline tubing, how far I can knit with 100 feet, and calculate how much tubing I'll need to purchase for this project. Stop by Stitching Together Saturday Morning, 10:00 - 11:30 am, Hwy 89, Downtown Greenville, between Anna's Cafe and the Fire Department. I'll have some tubing if you want to practice knitting with weird stuff with me!
